The 3-Week Plank Challenge: Finding the Motivation to Start

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably told yourself more than once, “I’ll start tomorrow.” I can’t even count how many times I’ve planned to begin a fitness routine, only to let life get in the way. For years, I’ve wanted to commit to something simple like a daily plank challenge. Every Monday seemed like the perfect day to start, and every Monday somehow turned into “maybe next week.”

The truth is, getting motivated is often the hardest workout of all. This time, I’m sharing the challenge because I’m finally committing to doing it too. If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” time, maybe we can start together.

Motivation often shows up after we’ve started—not before.

Why Motivation Is So Difficult

  • Exercise isn’t usually hard because we don’t know it’s good for us.
  • It’s hard because the couch is comfortable. The laundry needs folding. Dinner needs to be made. There are emails to answer, errands to run, and somehow there’s never enough time left for ourselves.
  • Sometimes it’s simply easier not to do it.
  • I’ve spent years talking myself out of exercising because I thought I needed an hour at the gym or a complicated workout plan. What I finally realized is that consistency matters much more than perfection.
  • A few minutes every day is far better than waiting for the perfect workout that never happens.

Why I Chose a Plank Challenge

One of the reasons this challenge appealed to me is because it removes almost every excuse.

  • It doesn’t require equipment.
  • It doesn’t require a gym membership.
  • It doesn’t require a huge block of time.
  • It only asks for a few minutes each day.
  • That feels doable—even on busy days.

Find a Small Space and Just Begin

One of the biggest misconceptions about exercising at home is thinking you need an entire workout room. Sometimes simply leaving a yoga mat out where you’ll see it is enough to remind yourself to take those few minutes for your health. These areas of your home will work just fine:

  • A small corner of your living room.
  • The bedroom floor.
  • A hallway.
  • A spot beside your bed.
  • Even a folded towel on the carpet is enough space to complete your plank.

The Benefits of Planking

Although it looks simple, a plank works multiple muscle groups at the same time. Some of the benefits include:

  • Stronger core muscles
  • Improved posture
  • Better balance
  • Greater shoulder and arm strength
  • Better support for your lower back
  • Improved stability
  • Increased endurance
  • A stronger foundation for everyday movement
  • It’s one of those exercises that gives you a lot in return for just a few minutes of effort.

The 3-Week Plank Challenge

Week 1

Hold a plank for 30 seconds every day. As the days go by, you may find yourself getting stronger. If it feels comfortable, gradually increase your hold toward 60 seconds by the end of the week.

Week 2

Continue planking every day. Increase your daily plank by 30 more seconds while maintaining good form. Don’t worry if you need short breaks, proper form is always more important than the clock.

Week 3

During your final week, add 60 more seconds to your plank time. Your goal is to reach 120–150 seconds each day. If holding one long plank feels too difficult, divide the time into shorter sets while continuing to challenge yourself.

Staying Motivated

I’m writing this article as much for myself as I am for anyone reading it. I’ve been trying to find the motivation to start this challenge for years. Instead of waiting until I feel motivated, I’m choosing to simply begin. Maybe that’s the secret. Motivation often shows up after we’ve started, not before.

I’m going to mark each day on my calendar, celebrate the small victories, and remind myself that consistency is more important than being perfect. If I miss a day, I’ll start again the next one. No guilt. No quitting. Just moving forward.

Let’s Do This Together

If you’ve been putting off getting healthier like I have, maybe this is your sign. Not because you’ll become a different person in three weeks. But because you’ll prove to yourself that you can keep a promise to yourself. Thirty seconds today can become two minutes tomorrow. Small daily habits have a way of turning into lifelong routines. I’m finally ready to stop saying “I’ll start next week.” I’m starting today. Who’s with me?
